Penquins Honor Teen With Cancer

"I used to be afraid, but I'm not afraid of dying now, if that's what you want to know. Because life ain't about how many breaths you take. It's what you do with those breaths." -- John Challis

From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette today:

Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and former Penguin Pierre Larouche. Photo: Matt Freed / Post-GazetteJohn Challis yawned.

"Smiling so much makes me tired," he said.

A Freedom High School athlete dealing with terminal cancer, John couldn't stop grinning during his experiences last night at Mellon Arena. The Beaver County teenager's recent successful at-bat in a varsity baseball game has gained national attention, and last night he was a guest of the Penguins for their National Hockey League playoff game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Penguins brought John, his parents and younger sister, Lexie, to the game in a limousine. Bravo restaurant in Ross gave the family dinner before the game. The Penguins took John and his family to Mario Lemieux's suite near the end of the first period. At one point, John was holding court with Lemieux, Steelers chairman Dan Rooney and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Making them all laugh. They all knew his situation.

"My head is spinning," John said later. "This week has just been incredible and now this. It was like someone dropped me off at the wrong party.

"I felt like one of the kings of the city for a few minutes with those guys. I really can't think of experiencing anything better than this, except maybe going to Rome or meeting God for the first time."

And speaking of Big Ben and golf...

According the PGA Tour's official website in their series on great places for golf, Pennsylvania is "Home of the nation's first capital, the Amish and Big Ben Roethlisberger! Pennsylvania is one of the biggest states in the northeast stretching from New Jersey to the Great Lakes. With a rich industrial as well as political history, Pennsylvania is just as much a vacation spot for history buffs as it is for golfers -- handy if you're into both pastimes."

A Message From Ben...

Yes, you read that correctly!

I received a message from Ben this evening through his agent, Mr. Ryan Tollner. Ben wanted me to share it with the fans that visit this site and I am very pleased to do so:

"First of all, I want to thank all of you who visit this site and support me. I am truly humbled by the site and grateful it exists. The site was brought to my attention by a few people close to me who visit it regularly. I must admit, I visit sometimes to see the photos and remind myself of what I’ve been up to!

"I want to thank Erin for the amazing amount of effort she puts in to the site. I simply can’t express how much I appreciate her loyalty. I also want to single out Christy (or 'Goodapplegal' or 'GAG') for her efforts on the site. I send Christy and her family my very best, as well as the kids she teaches. For everyone involved with the site, I thank you, and want you to know how much it means to me.

"I am motivated to be the best player I can be and the best person I can be because of good people like you who appreciate and support me. Thanks again and God bless you all." -Ben

Mr. Tollner was kind enough to contact me for the first time last autumn to thank me for my efforts with the site, and we have recently been in contact again.

*I would like to thank both Ben and Mr. Tollner for their continued support of my site!

'Berger on the Grille?

According to two Charleston, South Carolina newspapers...

FreshFields Village, Kiawah Island, South Carolina. From the Charleston Post & Courier -

Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is part-owner of the newly opened King Street Grille at FreshFields Village (at the juncture) of Seabrook and Kiawah Islands.

From Charleston's City Paper -

"King Street Grille recently opened the doors of its third location in five years on Kiawah Island, and it is expected to be their busiest yet. According to Scott Keir, one of the owners, this location was especially exciting because rather than retrofitting an existing space, for the first time they've built from scratch. The result is a restaurant similar in seating capacity to downtown, but with a back patio complete with TVs facing out, so patrons can enjoy the weather and never miss a moment of sports action. King Street Grille also enjoys the kind of sports bar credibility money can't buy. Pittsburgh Steelers' Super Bowl-winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has recently been seen hanging around at the downtown Grille, and when asked about rumors regarding business ties between them and Roethlisberger, Scott was coy. "Ben is a longtime friend," he says. Though he refuses to elaborate, Scott hints that future appearances by Big Ben are likely."

Senor Ben!

From Dale Lolley's blog:

The Pittsburgh Steelers wrapped up their second mini-camp under head coach Mike Tomlin Sunday with "Hat Day".

Senor Ben drops back to pass during drills on Sunday.Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger looked ridiculous dropping back to pass with his big, floppy sombrero, but not as ridiculous as placekicker Jeff Reed and long snapper Greg Warren, who were both running around with firemen’s hats on.

Roethlisberger was going for laughs – as was running back Najeh Davenport, who had a huge afro wig on. Reed and Warren undoubtedly thought they were being cool.

But the whole thing kind of showed how this team keeps things loose. Throughout every practice, they play little games with each other – ones that have been going on for years now – to keep everything a little light.

Ben's Foundation Giving K-9 Grants To Pittsburgh

From WTAE-TV 4 Today:

Ben during his press conference today.Ben Roethlisberger's foundation announced on Wednesday it will give $100,000 in K-9 grants to the city of Pittsburgh and surrounding areas.

Ben made the announcement at a press conference at the Pittsburgh Police Training Academy on Washington Boulevard in Lincoln-Lemington. Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and County Executive Dan Onorato attended the event.

The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation grants will go toward the purchase of K-9 units, protective vests and other equipment for Pittsburgh and surrounding municipalities.

The tragic death of a K-9 officer in Roethlisberger's hometown of Findlay, Ohio, gave birth to his foundation's first grant.

"How Sweed it is for Steelers' QB"

From Mike Bires column in Beaver County Times this morning :

A very happy Limas Sweed.Around 8:30 Saturday night, Ben Roethlisberger got the good news he wanted to hear. The Steelers drafted a tall wide receiver.

Similar to circumstances in the first round, the Steelers were fortunate enough to pick a prospect in the second round they didn’t think would still be on the board.

The Steelers thought running back Rashard Mendenhall would have been taken earlier, but he wasn’t. So they took him at No. 23 overall.

Likewise, Limas Sweed (above) had yet to be taken until the Steelers nabbed him with the 53rd overall pick.

Sweed, one of the most prolific wideouts to play at the University of Texas, was projected by most draft experts to go late in the first round. But apparently a wrist that forced him to miss several games last year was a concern for teams that considered drafting him.

After examining him at the NFL Combine in February and watching him work out at his pro day in Austin, Tex., the Steelers believe Sweed’s wrist won’t be a problem.

He’s expected to be Steelers’ No. 3 receiver behind starters Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes.

"No, I’m not disappointed I didn’t go in the first round because everything happens for a reason," said Sweed, who ranks second in Texas history with 20 career TD catches.

"I’m with the Pittsburgh Steelers and I’m ready to get in and go to work. Some people had a first-round grade on me but I never paid attention to it. This is where I ended up at, and I am happy about it.

"Ben is a great quarterback and I look forward to working with him."

"$8,000 Grant Will Help Heidelberg In Purchase Of Police Dog"

From the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette today:

One change Heidelberg's police chief Vernon Barkley instituted after he took over the department in December 2005 was the addition of occasional foot patrols by police officers.

The purpose was to deter crime and to enable his officers to interact with borough residents.

Once officers started walking the beat, a number of Heidelberg residents showed up at council meetings to say they liked the new personal approach to police work, and the increased visibility of the officers in their neighborhoods.

Now, a four-legged member of the force will be added to the patrols.

The Council voted April 15th to accept an $8,000 grant from the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation to develop a K-9 program for the police department.

"Leadership Becomes Focus For Big Ben"

From Scott Brown's column today in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

Ben during OTA's this week. After talking to reporters Tuesday, Ben Roethlisberger said "see you on the golf course" and headed toward the locker room at the Steelers' South Side facility.

The offseason isn't just about lowering his handicap for Roethlisberger.

The fifth-year quarterback is aiming to raise his play on the football field -- and the Steelers as well -- something that may be incumbent upon Roethlisberger given the eight-year, $102 million contract he signed with the team in March.

"I'm trying to become more of a vocal leader out there," Roethlisberger said after an organized team activity (OTA) practice. "It feels good to be out there and have another year of offense under our belt. And we feel more comfortable in these OTAs, and I'm sure we will in minicamp, than we did last year at this time."

A more comfortable Roethlisberger could be a scary thing for the rest of the NFL.

He shattered a team single-season record last season with 32 touchdown passes, and he was selected to his first Pro Bowl after leading the Steelers to an AFC North title.

Roethlisberger, 26, dismissed the notion that he may feel pressure to try and do too much next season because of the new deal he signed.

"I'm just growing as a leader and a quarterback," he said.

Part of that entails the work Roethlisberger got in with the offense during the practices that were held Monday and yesterday. The Steelers may have a new center this season since they signed Justin Hartwig, a free agent, to compete with Sean Mahan for the starting job.

"We talk and we work on snaps and we develop that way," Roethlisberger said on the rapport he is developing with Hartwig. "Sean is my center that I had last year, so I'm still working with him mostly."

2008 Steelers Schedule Added

Check the gray column on the right for the Steelers 2008 schedule.

From ESPN today after the schedule was announced -

When are the league's best quarterback matchups?

Carson Palmer and Ben Roethlisberger. You can never go wrong when New England's Tom Brady plays Indianapolis' Peyton Manning. The Patriots and Colts meet Week 9 in Indianapolis.

A pair of $100 million quarterbacks will face off twice this year when the Pittsburgh Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger will be opposite Carson Palmer of the Cincinnati Bengals. The AFC North rivals will meet in Week 7 at Cincinnati and Week 12 at Pittsburgh.

Palmer also will be involved in a battle of former No. 1 overall picks when the Bengals travel to play Eli Manning and the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants in Week 3.

"What comes to mind is just how great he played at the end, from that Week 17 New England game on. He was on fire,'' Palmer said of Eli Manning. "It's a lesson to all of us that if you and your team get hot at the right time, you can win the Super Bowl.

As for Ben, I guess it's true we may be rivals for a long time. The thing I think about most with Ben is just how many games he's won, and how many tough games he's found a way to get it done."

Steelers Basketball Team To Play At Belle Vernon Area High School

From The Valley Independent today:

The Steelers' basketball team will be playing a charity basketball game May 9 at Belle Vernon Area High School with proceeds going to an athletic scholarship fund named in honor of three former Lep athletes -- John Murt, Sasha Zuro and Chris Williams -- who passed away at young ages.

John Murt, 22, and Sasha Zuro, 26, died in a January fire at The Villages at Seven Sports. Chris Williams was 28 when he died of colon cancer in 2003.

Murt and Zuro were basketball players. Williams played baseball and football.

Ben Roethlisberger, Hines Ward, Charlie Batch, Bryant McFadden, Deshea Townsend, Ryan Clark, Troy Polamalu, James Harrison, Heath Miller and Jason Capizzi are some of the names on the Steelers' basketball roster.

However, which Steelers show up at the Leps' gym next month is anyone's guess.

Facing the Steelers will be some of Murt's former teammates like Erik Gill, Shaun Rohland and Matt Rowland as well as area businessmen.

For ticket information, please contact Jim Protin at (412) 680-6480.

Also Today:

From Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post Gazette -

The National Football League will announce its full schedule of regular-season games on Tuesday, the Post-Gazette has learned.

The Steelers schedule of 16 regular-season games has been rated the toughest in the league by virtue of their opponents' records in 2007. While each team's opponents have been known, the dates and times of each game finally will be released by the league tomorrow.

For those that are unaware, I maintain a second fan site with a photo gallery that is the same as the one used here. That site's gallery was hacked into last Wednesday (as were several hundred other Coppermine galleries).

It has taken me almost a week to recover the almost 3,000 photos, screen captures and scans that were hacked into...needless to say, it was not a good week! It was hacked the moment I logged on to upload photos - and because of this, I will not log on to the gallery here until I have it upgraded, which may take a week or more.

All the photos that were added prior to Wednesday, April 9th can still be safely viewed and saved...there is no danger to your computer! But any new photos will be added to a temporary "Flickr" photo gallery here (I've added a couple of recent finds), until the new upgraded and secure gallery is in place.

I am sorry for any inconvenience.

You do not need to be a member of Flickr to view the photos, only to comment.

The Second Annual Ben Roethlisberger Challenge

From The Findlay Courier this morning:

March Madness may yet be gripping the basketball world. But in Findlay High's gymnasium Saturday night, winning and losing took a distant back seat to entertainment.

The annual basketball game generates funds for the Ben Roethlisberger Scholarship Fund. Roethlisberger also donated $100 for every point he scored to the FHS football program.

"That's why Ritz (FHS football coach Mark Ritzler) passes me the ball so much," Roethlisberger joked.

NFL Spring Meetings: Tomlin, Crennel & Lewis Talk "Big Ben"

Mike Tomlin & Ben during training camp. From the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

When asked about questions that had been raised about Roethlisberger's work ethic early in his career, Mike Tomlin all but laughed out loud.

"I don't know where the reputation came from. That reputation was prior to my relationship with him and I say that as bluntly as I can say it," Tomlin said. "He's always coming in with suggestions; whether or not I take them is another thing, but I appreciate that dialogue. I enjoy that dialogue with him because it all indicates that he wants to win by any means. That's what you respect about him the most."

From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette & the Cincinnati Enquirer:

Fans of the AFC North can only hope the scramble for the 2008 division championship will be as entertaining as the scrapping that went on at breakfast yesterday among the teams' four coaches to predict a winner.

"I still think the Steelers are the team to beat," said Marvin Lewis, giving the most complete divisional assessment of the four coaches. "They won the division last year. They won the division two of the last four years."

Among the reasons Lewis likes the Steelers is the play of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who earned a Pro Bowl berth last season, one year after his season of distress.

"Pittsburgh has the experience, they've won; quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is coming off his best season," Lewis said.

Ben, Mike Tomlin & Romeo Crennel - November 11, 2007Roethlisberger was one reason the Browns made their two trades for defensive linemen, Romeo Crennel said.

"The second game against Pittsburgh the last two years, we've been ahead in those games with a good chance to win," Crennel said. "We just didn't get it done. Their quarterback made plays for them and he won the games for them basically. So, hopefully, we can neutralize him a little bit with some of the guys we added to the team and be able to get over the hump."

Gridiron Giving

From last month's Philanthropy Magazine :

The National Football League's All-Star Philanthropists by Michael Leaser

It takes brains. It takes guts. Most importantly, it takes a lot of heart. To succeed at this level requires putting in years of hard work. It entails rising above the moments of self-doubt. It means overcoming the crushing disappointments. The great ones push through. "Success demands singleness of purpose," Vince Lombardi once said. These guys would know. After all, it's what makes them the NFL's All-Star Philanthropists. (And it probably helps on the field, too.) Some players sacrifice their time. Some give their money. For others, it's a combination of both. What unites these pigskin philanthropists is their determination to give deeply of themselves.

Big Ben and the Dogs

Ben with his dog, HerculesBen Roethlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers has always loved dogs. He also has long had a deep respect for police officers, especially since some of his childhood friends decided "to protect and serve."

So, a couple years ago, when his hometown police department's service dog, Flip, was shot and killed in the line of duty, Roethlisberger reacted immediately. He gave the department the funds to buy a new dog--and a K-9 ballistic vest.

With support from donations to the program, the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation formally expanded its K-9 support efforts last year to include police departments in the Pittsburgh area--as well as in the metropolitan areas of every city the Steelers visited that season. "We started by contacting the city police department in a given metropolitan area, such as St. Louis, for instance, and go from there, getting an assessment of the area's needs and determining where we can best allocate the foundation's resources," says Roethlisberger. "We've learned that many police departments may have the budget for K-9 dogs, but not for ballistic vests."

"The great value of these dogs is that they're not just patrol dogs. Many of them are drug- and bomb-sniffing dogs, too. They provide invaluable assistance to our nation's finest, who are risking their lives to protect our cities and ensure our safety."

Roethlisberger has plans for expanding the program in future years. "You hear about players who don't put the time and work into a foundation, and it fizzles out eventually. I enjoy taking a hands-on approach with my foundation. And I've met many of the dogs that we've purchased. I'm looking forward to continuing this program for as long as I can."
