Mike Tomlin put Jeff Reed on the hot seat yesterday and the kicker delivered. Tomlin told Reed the plan early “just so he could sleep on it a little bit” and he asked him not to tell anyone. But word leaked to Ben Roethlisberger and Hines Ward, who began cheering.
Tomlin called the team up and told everyone his plan, and the team broke the huddle in excited anticipation. The players motioned to the fans to make noise and Chuck Noll Field rocked a bit before Reed banged the 42-yarder through the middle of the uprights.
“Actually it was worse that he did mention it because I thought about it all night last night and didn’t want to let my team down,” Reed said. “I’m glad it worked out for the best."

ESPN SportsCenter Interview, aired July 16, 2008 56 views(ESPN's Ed Werder interviews Ben:)
Ed Werder: Give me a sense of what you thought of your first season with Mike Tomlin as head coach in Pittsburgh.
Ben: I thought it was a good season. I thought we learned a lot from each other as a team and individually. You know, it was a learning process for all of us and I think we’ll all make improvements and we’ll all be better for it.

ESPN SportsCenter Interview, aired July 16, 2008 54 viewsEd Werder: "What did you think about his style of coaching?"
Ben: "Well, he has fun. He’s always energetic. I don’t wanna say he’s like a kid, but you know he’s like a player. He’s always out there havin’ a good time and you don’t feel pressure like when you come off the field he’s gonna scream at you. He’s gonna talk to you and you know, he has fun."

ESPN SportsCenter Interview, aired July 16, 2008 45 viewsWerder: "How much different is his approach from Bill Cowher’s, who you came in under?"
Ben: "You know what, every coach has a different philosophy and different coaching style. Coach Cowher was more of an in-your-face and intense guy. You know, that’s just the way he coached, and there’s nothing wrong with that, obviously. Coach Tomlin is more, like I said, 'let me talk to you on your level and just understand where you’re comin’ from a little bit.' "Jul 17, 2008

ESPN SportsCenter Interview, aired July 16, 2008 48 viewsEd Werder: "Your rookie season, you came in, became the youngest starting quarterback in NFL history to win the Super Bowl, but the offense depended more on other people, like Hines Ward and the running game. Now, it depends more week to week on your performance. What’s that evolution been like for you?"
Ben: "It’s been good. Bruce Arians’ offense, being in cohesiveness with the wide receivers, calling some of the plays and getting some of the best plays possible. It’s been fun, it’s been a challenge for us, but I think we’ll be a year better this year."

ESPN SportsCenter Interview, aired July 16, 2008 50 viewsEd Werder: "Despite your enormous size of six foot one (Ed said it, I didn't) and 240 pounds, you’ve been sacked 93 times the past two years. Your offensive line is still in transition. How long can you even endure that kind of punishment?"
Ben: "I feel fine, because I didn’t take any real big shots last year. You know, a lot of those sacks we looked at were my fault and we’ll make improvements. I think the offensive line’s gonna do great this year, it’s a young group that’s really good, and I have a lot of faith in them and...every single one of them, that they’ll get the job done."Jul 17, 2008

ESPN SportsCenter Interview, aired July 16, 2008 64 viewsEd Werder: "You said before the draft in the off-season that Hines Ward might be offended that you wanted a bigger receiver. The organization seemingly listened to you and went out and got Limas Sweed. It was a high pick. How much do you appreciate the fact that when you say something like that, the organization gives you the opportunity?"
Ben: "Well, you know, actually that was taken out of context. I never really asked for that. I suppose, I guess they went off of something that wasn’t really spoken of. But I don’t think they necessarily took him because I said something. I think that they thought he was the best player in the draft at that time, and they took him. I have all the confidence in the world in the receivers I’ve had in the past and been workin’ with them a lot, and I think they’re gonna be awesome. And we got some young guys that maybe didn’t play so much last year but were on the team, that really have evolved into great players. So I think that we’ll see some good things from our receivers this year."
