MU Redhawks Gameday Program - October 13, 20072031 viewsBen (in the background) returned to Miami for a pre-game ceremony for the retirement of his jersey number.
On Saturday, October 13, 2007, Miami of Ohio retired Ben Roethlisberger's number. It was the first time in 34 years Miami has retired a football jersey number. Ben became only the third athlete in Miami football history to have his jersey number retired, joining John Pont and Bob Hitchens.
The former RedHawk quarterback, now a star with the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers, led Hoeppner's 2003 club to 13 consecutive victories, a Mid-American Conference Championship, a victory in the GMAC Bowl and a No. 10 ranking in the final national polls. Roethlisberger earned Third-Team All-America honors during his record-breaking junior season and became just the third Miami player to capture the Vern Smith Award as the Mid-American Conference Most Valuable Player.
Ben holds school records for career yards (10,829) and touchdowns (84).
He was selected with the 11th overall pick in 2004 by the Pittsburgh Steelers -- the highest draft position of any Miami player in program history. Ben led the Steelers to victory in each of his first 14 NFL starts, leading Pittsburgh to the AFC Championship game and being named the NFL's Rookie of the Year. One year later he led the Steelers to a 21-10 win over Seattle in Super Bowl XL.

Black & Ghoul Halloween - 2014778 viewsHere's my grandson Mason as Ben this Halloween. This is also Mason's first Halloween without his daddy, Treaver. Treaver was my son who unfortunately was killed in a terrible car crash July 23, 2014 at the young age of 20 by his friend who was driving drunk and while trying to pass a truck on the right side of the road recklessly lost control and ended up in oncoming traffic. My son was killed on impact. Treaver and I had a great relationship with the Steelers and watched all the games together, we even made it to a few in Pittsburgh. I try to make it to at least 1 game a year, however it's bittersweet this year and I won't be able to make the trip this season. I will make it there next season where his ashes will be spread there at Heinz Field. Heinz Field is a very special place for me to remember the best times we were able to share with each other.
Treaver played football from the age of 4 all the way up to high school, and he dreamed of playing for the Steelers organization after playing for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Treaver got in a little trouble and had to go to boarding school in Glen Mills Pennsylvania to get back on track and decided he wanted to counsel young kids who were also going down the wrong path. He never made it past his first year of college when the accident happened. I miss my son more than anyone can ever imagine and I want to spread the word about drinking and driving so no more parents have to bury their children.
I am very gracious to have Mason to continue the Steelers tradition with, and will be taking him to plenty of games as he grows older. before my son's passing he picked out Mason's jersey and said he couldn't be anything but Ben this year because it would bring Ben luck, it did bring him luck...Andrew Luck where he had the game of his career last week. We have Baltimore this week (my husbands team) and Mason and I will be wearing our jerseys so hopefully we bring you luck, and you can give me a win to shut my husbands mouth. Thank you for the opportunity to share a little about our story.
GO STEELERS !!!!!!!!!

February 9, 2013 - Miami University Hall of Fame Induction Weekend2828 viewsRoethlisberger was Saturday’s headliner and spoke about his affection for Miami and the degree that he finalized in 2012. His last football season in Oxford was 2003, when the RedHawks went 13-1 and earned a No. 10 ranking by the Associated Press.
“I’m honored to be a graduate, to have my number retired, to be in the Hall of Fame now and to say that I went to Miami,†Roethlisberger said. “People all the time ask, why Miami? And I say obviously the academics and a chance to play early and Coach Hoeppner.â€
Of the bachelor’s degree in education that he picked up last May, the 30-year-old Findlay High School graduate said it was something he always hoped to obtain.
“It was a bigger goal early on, and then as you start getting sidetracked, offseasons get shorter and things are going on,†Roethlisberger said. “Having a son on the way — and now he’s here — it just kind of motivated me further to get it done and just to tell my son and hopefully more kids that I got my degree and how important education is.â€
