February 9, 2013 - Miami University Hall of Fame Induction Weekend2859 viewsRoethlisberger was Saturdayâ€™s headliner and spoke about his affection for Miami and the degree that he finalized in 2012. His last football season in Oxford was 2003, when the RedHawks went 13-1 and earned a No. 10 ranking by the Associated Press.

â€œIâ€™m honored to be a graduate, to have my number retired, to be in the Hall of Fame now and to say that I went to Miami,â€ Roethlisberger said. â€œPeople all the time ask, why Miami? And I say obviously the academics and a chance to play early and Coach Hoeppner.â€

Of the bachelorâ€™s degree in education that he picked up last May, the 30-year-old Findlay High School graduate said it was something he always hoped to obtain.

â€œIt was a bigger goal early on, and then as you start getting sidetracked, offseasons get shorter and things are going on,â€ Roethlisberger said. â€œHaving a son on the way â€” and now heâ€™s here â€” it just kind of motivated me further to get it done and just to tell my son and hopefully more kids that I got my degree and how important education is.â€

May 6, 2012 - Graduation Day 2597 viewsItâ€™s been a big offseason for Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. First he graduated from Miami University, and now he has been selected as one of six individuals to be inducted into the schoolâ€™s Athletic Hall of Fame later this year.

Roethlisberger, who played at Miami from 2001-03, holds all of the schoolâ€™s major passing records, including passing for 200 yards or more in all 14 games in 2003, also an NCAA record for most games in a season passing for 200 yards or more and consecutive 200 yards plus passing games.

What makes the induction really special for Roethlisberger is he is going in the same year as his former coach, the late Terry Hoeppner (photo above). Hoeppner, who died of brain cancer in June, 2007, spent 19 seasons at Miami, and was the head coach during Roethlisbergerâ€™s time at the school. Miami had a winning season each of Hoeppnerâ€™s six years as the schoolâ€™s head coach (1999-2004).

â€œThat was the biggest thing for me,â€ said Roethlisberger of being inducted with Hoeppner. â€œItâ€™s an honor to go into the Hall of Fame, but to go in with Coach Hoeppner kind of made me tear up a bit and gave me goose bumps. To me that means more than going in myself. It will be an emotional day.â€
